Safari pricing can feel opaque until you see how the pieces fit together. This page explains the structure rather than the numbers: The Arusha Project is an independent travel journal, we sell nothing, and figures change often enough that any price we printed would soon mislead you. Always confirm current amounts with official sources and with whoever you book through.
Park and conservation fees
Entry fees are set by the authorities, not by hotels or drivers. The Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA), headquartered in Arusha, manages the national parks, including Arusha National Park and Tarangire. The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is managed separately by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), with its own fee structure. Fees may be charged per person, per day or per entry, and vehicles, guides and activities can carry separate charges. Check each authority's official pages before you budget, and ask any quote to list fees as a separate line.
Packages versus day trips
A multi-day safari package usually bundles vehicle, driver-guide, fuel, accommodation, meals and park fees. That is convenient but makes comparison hard, so ask for an itemised breakdown. Day trips from Arusha, such as a game drive in Arusha National Park or a walk and paddle at Lake Duluti, can be a lower-commitment way to see the area. Our guide to day trips from Arusha covers options, and How to Choose a Safari Operator lists questions to ask.
Seasons
The dry season runs from June to October, the long rains from March to May and the short rains usually in November and December. Demand, and often accommodation rates, tend to follow the dry months and holiday periods, while the rainy months may be quieter. Some properties close or change their pricing by season, so check dates carefully. Read more in Dry and Rainy Seasons.
Tipping
Tipping guides, cooks and camp staff is a common practice on safari in Tanzania. Customs and expectations vary, so ask your operator or accommodation for their current guidance before you travel, and plan to carry some cash for it.
Money practicalities
- Tanzania's currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS).
- Check in advance which payment methods park gates and lodges accept, as these can change.
- Ask whether quotes are per person or per vehicle, and whether they include fees and taxes.
- Budget for travel insurance; see Health Prep and Travel Insurance.
